Transfixing Motherfucker (Slovenly Recordings)

I've spun — physically and digitally — the A-side's "Backstab" (Transfixing Motherfucker by

POWERSOLO) well over 200 times in 2022. Describing its brilliance would cost me too many

words, so I'll just say that every time a Quentin Tarantino movie is made without this song

soundtracking a fight scene, god kills a kitten. Your move, Q.T.

C.A. Coyle of The Inlander (Washington DC) wrote.

POWERSOLO is a rock and roll band which formed in 1996 in Aarhus, Denmark by Vocalist/Guitarist

Kim “Kix” Jeppesen. POWERSOLO is an active group, recording and touring internationally and

extensively through Europe and the USA, as-well-as featuring on several soundtracks for TV and

film including the Danish/Canadian crime drama Himmerland, and american television series True

Blood and American Horror Story.

Their sound- termed by the band as “Donkey Punk” is

characterized by an often frantic and raucous blend of Garage, Punk, Psychobilly, Surf, and World

Music. This patois leans heavily on a Blues-based rock sound which is recorded often with what

could be called utilitarian, obscure, or often primitive instruments and tech. This loans a very

authentic-sounding vintage aesthetic to their recordings.

POWERSOLO’s live shows often leave even the most seasoned of showgoers bewildered and confused, but

always entertained by their quirky, rude, and silly-yet-threatening stage antics- if not by the simple raw

power that this group delivers to the crowd at every performance.

Influences and Genretizing Issues.

POWERSOLO brings together a distinctively widespread mix of genres centered around an

aforementioned mix of Garage, Punk, Rockabilly, Psychobilly, Surf, Psychedelic, Acid Rock, Blues,

World Music, Country, Hard Rock, and frankly an objective list of others as well. Never a band to

be put into one box, these influences bounce back-and-forth on every record, displaying the groups

versatility, whilst still always carrying a retro-rock vibe to all of their compositions. This is bound

together sonically by what is often an analog-driven or lofi approach to recording. It could be said

that POWERSOLO’s sound is somewhat stripped-down, but never minimalist rock n’ roll.

You're just Seven Inches From Heaven baby!

history

PowerSolo started in December of 1996 as the moniker for Kim ‘Kix” Jeppesen's solo endeavors (Hank Robot). The first outing was at the reputed Aarhus venue Vestergade 58. This was a one-man show. Kim is cited as saying, “PowerSolo was just me, busking and playing apartment gigs,” at the start.

In 1999, Kim’s brother Bo “Atomic Child” Jeppesen joined the band on drums. In 1999 and 2000, the band recorded and toured supporting their debut release “Lemon Half Moon”. Contributions to this album include Nick Sorento providing the lyrics for ‘I’m Not Seventeen Anymore’ and liner notes from Kim’s close friend Sebastien Doubinsky. The group tours with Bob Log III, and has a chance meeting with Andre Williams on this tour. In 2001, the album was released on Copenhagen based label ESP/Kick. Critical reception of this album was tepid, with a number of positive reviews from intrigued critics being buried by a slurry of negative statements. PowerSolo continues to play tracks from this record live to this day, with Kim calling the tone of the album, “Very Anarchist in its expression.”

The aforementioned meeting with Andre Williams occurred when PowerSolo, still then a duo, opened for him at Voxhall in Aarhus, Denmark. After a few exchanges backstage, Andre’s tour manager summoned the duo to meet with Andre in his dressing room, where Andre then expressed an interest in recording a version of PowerSolo’s number entitled “SLB”. Two songs were recorded at Delta Lab in Denmark, however never surfaced due to Williams having a stint of ill health shortly after. Williams would try to contact the group during the recording of their next album to approach them about being his backing band for his next european tour, however contact was again lost due to Williams’ health issues, and plans and endeavors with him fell through. Kim Kix cites Andre as being a major influence on the group.

In 2002, JC Benz joined the group on drums, shifting  Bo “Atomic Child” to guitars, with elder brother Kim “Kix” still fronting the trio on guitar and vocals.

In 2003, PowerSolo signed with the reputable Copenhagen-based indie label Crunchy Frog, who feature artists such as The Tremolo Beer Gut, Junior Senior, The Raveonettes, and Jon Spencer project Heavy Trash.

2004 brought about a significant year for the band’s career, with the March release of their sophomore LP, “It’s Raceday and Your Pussy Is Gut!”. This album ends up being the breakthrough release for the group, and sonically one of their most highly-polished to date. The album displays some obvious undertones of Latin, Funk, Country-Folk, along with the normal retro-rock palette the band is now famed for. Andre Williams vocals are featured on the track “Hillbilly Child”. The recording of “It’s Raceday and Your Pussy Is Gut!” took place at Delta Lab in Copenhagen, and was engineered by The Great Nalna, who also produced the album alongside PowerSolo and Jesper Reginal. Between 2004 and 2005 the album received substantial airplay, earning the band multiple singles of the week. Awards nominations came as a surprise to the band, and it was not long before PowerSolo was asked to perform for multiple television appearances and award shows. Touring for this album took place in 2004 and 2005 across Scandinavia, The UK, and other European countries, as well as in the USA.

In October of 2005, PowerSolo released the split EP “Snot Dum” with friends The Defectors. The EP is recorded at Danish radio’s Studio 1, and is engineered by Jakob Langkilde. PowerSolo contributes two tracks to this EP- which easily display the band at their funkiest with bass-driven riffs, plenty of wah-wah, and a glossy horn section.

Gaining notice for their versatility and sheer musicality, if not for their raw but well-tempered arrangements/recordings, the group is asked in 2006 to compose the soundtrack for Danish/Canadian crime thriller “Himmerland”, starring actors Nicolaj Coster-Waldau, James Barclay, and Slatko Buric. The film was released in 2008.

2006 also brought the release of PowerSolo’s third LP, an album entitled “Egg”. This album was recorded on their home turf, at Feedback Studios in Aarhus, Denmark. This album carries on the momentum of the previous release, “It’s Raceday and Your Pussy It Gut!”. But, where the previous was more focused on acutely influenced arrangements, this album is more free in form overall. The tone and general timbre allows this album to flow in between the influences of northern soul and a more generalized rock tone with their characteristic rockabilly sound still prevalent- in such a way where it both shows the versatility but affirms the northern soul influence and the ability to adapt to more modern production standards. The album features Jon Spencer on the track “Aloha New York”, giving a lyrical contribution. The track is cited by Kim as being a particular favorite on the album.  “Egg” also features 60’s rocker Martin Stone of The Action and The Mighty Baby fame on the track “Every Little Girl”, a hard nod to the legitimacy of the groups garage-oriented, overall vintage sound and musical aesthetic.

In March of 2007, PowerSolo appeared on the Joe Meek tribute album “A Tribute To Joe Meek - The Lady The Crying Eyes” with an updated rendition of pop hit “Love Is Strange”. The supplanted version takes out the older versions polished production and substitutes a more stripped down single vocalist approach, with no unnecessary flare.

In 2008, PowerSolo began work on their fourth album. The recordings take place both in Aarhus and Copenhagen. The group goes for a more live/band playing in a room together process in production, much of it being recorded with a simple pair of ambient ribbon mics placed in a room without any isolation. “BloodSkinBones” was released in 2009. En masse, this album is a return to the garage-punk roots of the band, with upbeat, blues and punk oriented progressions, and may be PowerSolo's most raucous contribution to date.

Writing and recording for a fifth LP begins in 2010, and culminates in the release of “Buzz Human” in 2011. The band tours heavily with this album in the EU and USA, with PowerSolo making their sixth appearance at the SXSW festival. Sebastien Doubinsky contributes the introductory statements on the albums first (and eponymous) track, words that help solidify the cult mythos around the band. “Buzz Human” gives a certain nod to the 1950’s influence and 60’s psychedelia that the band is now known best for. This album also keeps the raw, more live sounding production aggregate of the former release, and seems to solidify the sonic trend for their albums past and to come. This album is at times somber, but is rather punctuated by the more hokum and novel lyrical content that PowerSolo is known best for. Deeper cuts off the album still display a diverse array of influences, and include contributions from musicians Celina Ozymandias with vocals on “Acid Orchid” and Joachim Leksell on “Sensation”.

Recording for the prominent album “The Real Sound” began in 2013, with the album seeing release the following year, 2014. PowerSolo toured with this album in 2015 in the EU, USA, and South Africa. “The Real Sound” is likely PowerSolo’s best known album, likely for the cult sensation that the video for their lauded number “Boom Babba Do Ba Dabba” generates on the web. This simple and surfy track and accompanying video seem to epitomize the attitude of the band in all of its aberrant attitude and esoteric nature. Said track kicks off the album, and introduces listeners to a sound palette that is less produced and refined, with a warmer analog sound to the production. This gives everything on the album an extra dose of lofi grit, and better matches the sound qualities of their influences. The album was recorded at the home studio of Kim ‘Kix’ Jeppesen, with a minimalist and quite utilitarian set-up. Kim used a somewhat primitive multitrack digital recorder, with an analog preamp loop to warm up the input sounds and give an “analog” or “lo-fi” feel to the tracks. From there, individual tracks had to be burnt onto CDs and loaded into a DAW for final mixing. Most instruments were simply recorded with Shure SM57 and SM58 microphones, with a special eye taken microphone placement. This may have offered a mix that was initially flatter sounding, but easier to construct- as all tracks would theoretically sit evenly within the mix. The tracks were then exported to Crunchy Frog studios and mixed and mastered by Jesper “Yebo” Reginal and The Great Nalna, with Kim present in the studio for finalization and production input.

Production begins on the special release “The Unreal Zound (Tue Track vz. PowerSolo)” in 2015, with the album seeing release in 2016. Electronic arranger/musician Tue Track cuts up some of PowerSolo’s best known material, drawing heavily on the groove solidified by “The Real Sound” in all of its garage-esq glory. The songs are centered around the bands most retro-rock sounding tracks, and given an industrial and dub style EDM treatment. . Tracks have the S letters of their titles stylized with a Z, or have a Z appended to the title. A micro-documentary is made about the production of this release and is currently available for free viewing online.

In 2018, PowerSolo records and releases “Bo-Peep” on Crunchy Frog Records and Dirty Water in the USA. The album is released digitally, and also sees release on vinyl for collectors and devotees of the band. PowerSolo tours with this album in Europe and in the USA, documenting parts of the tour as they travel and sharing it with fans via social media. The album carries the same analog warmth that “The Real Sound” displayed, with the influences trending more towards the late 60’s psychedelia the spread across the globe, pinned to very garage-rock and surf-rock influenced instrumentation. Influences of 60’s bubblegum pop can also be detected, and though there are tracks with a rockabilly influence like “Lost Angeles”, the album is by-and-large a departure from that sound embracing the aforementioned influences, allowing the album to be more free-flowing and narrative. Though raw and scathing at times, this album features some of the groups most laid-back tracks- even hearkening to the aesthetic and production quality that can be found in the late 60’s Bay Area psychedelic rock. “Bo-Peep” was also recorded in a manner very similar to “The Real Sound”, the explanation for the two albums similar sonic qualities. Kim “Kix” Jeppesen plays all parts- giving a primitive and raw sound to the drums in particular. Many of the tracks were completed in a single take. Most of the guitar tracks were recorded with a small 15 watt solid state amp containing its own spring reverb tank, resulting in a particularly unique sound. Some of Jeppesen’s live rig was also used in the recording of this album for sonic diversity. The effects used included Memoryman Analog Echo, and Kim’s signature PowerSolo Underdrive, an Overdrive/Dirt Pedal designed by Petr Mogelevski of Analogfox, based on Kim’s ideas and specifications.

Around this time, Bo “Atomic Child” Jeppesen departed from the group after 19 years of service, and was replaced by baritone guitarist Anders “Peasoup” Pedersen of The Desoto Caucus and Giant Sand.

2019 saw the releases of the singles “Transfixing Motherfucker” as a 7” on Slovenly Recordings, and “Glædelig Jul Allesammen” as a split single featuring a B side performed by The Courettes on Crunchy Frog Recordings.

PowerSolo continues to tour in 2020, backing the release of “Seven Inches From Heaven”, a compilation of all of their 7” releases. This was released in late February of 2020.

Latest release (during corona lockdown) is the 7” EP “High Gravity” with special guests Erik and Evan Foster of the Boss Martians recorded at NoCount Studios, Seattle, WA.
